Autism West Midlands

Driving forward autism awareness and education

Autism West Midlands delivers a comprehensive schedule of training courses to a range of professionals, carers and families. We offer autism awareness training that can be ‘tailored’ to the largest audience. These include, for example:
• An insight into Autism/Asperger Syndrome for West Midlands Police
• Awareness raising on Autistic Spectrum Disorder for Housing Association staff
• Behaviour that is a challenge (for teachers of pupils with ASD)
• Practical intervention workshops (for carers)

In addition we offer the following forms of accredited courses that are more in depth and therefore of a longer duration:

An introduction to working with children with ASD

Accredited by University College Worcester, this is an undergraduate certificate course consisting of two modules. It is possible for people attending the course who have a first degree and/or Qualified Teacher Status, to follow the same course and gain two Masters level modules by completing a different assessment process.

The Learning Disability Award Framework – Autism Unit

The LDAF is the Government required training for staff supporting people with a learning disability. As many people with a learning disability have a diagnosis of autism as well, there is now a LDAF unit on Autism. (Positive Approaches to Supporting People who have Autism). We are able to deliver this as a discrete unit, with participants gaining accreditation through the Open College Network.

The Web Autism course in conjunction with the University of Birmingham

This is a national course on autism that is assessed via the web.

We hold a number of conferences and training events throughout the year on most aspects of living and working with autism. These include expert speakers, professionals and individuals with ASD and their family members, for example.

Tailormade Training

Tailormade training packages or conferences can be established such as:
• Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and ASD
• Effective Communication
• Criminal Justice
• Advocacy
