Informal Family Carers ASD Programme
Course Outline
This is a course of physical intervention training aimed at the family members of a person who has ASD (autistic spectrum disorder), both moderate and severe. It is designed specifically for the people who are significant in that person’s life.
To get the most out of the training we advise you to come as a pair e.g. this could include one or both parents, grandparents, sibling etc.
It is an opportunity to attend certified training and learn new skills in a supportive environment
It is a course of 6 sessions offering a non-aversive approach to managing challenging behaviour, and it is very important that you attend every session.

Session 1 – Defining challenging behaviour and why it occurs

Session 5 – The importance of debriefing after an incident

Session 6 – Participation into the use of physical techniques e.g. being able to get out of grabs/hair pulls. It also emphasises the importance of only using physical intervention as a last resort.
