Informal Family Carers Generic Programme
Course Outline
This is a course aimed at the family members of a person who has a learning disability, both moderate and severe. It is designed specifically for the people who are significant in that person’s life.
It is a course of 6 sessions offering a range of modules, including non-aversive approach to managing challenging behaviour, reactive strategies and mental health issues.
It is very important that you attend every session.

Module 1 - Introduction to modules and Causes of Challenging Behaviour and debriefing
Summary: Looking into a number of issues that can effect behaviours and the attitude and beliefs of those involved. Also, the importance of talking and supporting each other.

Module 2 - Reactive Strategies for Managing Behaviours
Summary: How to design strategies for when behaviours occur.

Module 3 - Delegates issues, Human Rights consent and the Law
Summary: An introduction to individuals rights and issues surrounding consent to treatment and the Law.

Module 4 - Communications and Sensory Planning
Summary: Introduction to Understanding in the communication procress.

Module 5 - Physical Interventions and safety for challenging situations (optional – to be discussed)
Summary: Techniques to deal with hand, hair grabs and biting.

Summary: What is mental health and what are the behaviours that can arise?
