Crossroads Young Carers

Definition of a young carer:

Young carers are children and young people under 18, who's life is restricted by the need to take responsibility for a person who is either:

chronically ill, has a disability, is experiencing mental distress, is affected by alcohol and/ or substance misuse or is elderly or infirm.

The person you may be caring for could be:

A parent, a brother or sister, grandparent or other relative who is disabled, has some chronic illness, mental health problem or other condition connected with a need for care, support or supervision.

Our Mission

To give every young carer the same life chances as any young person in Birmingham.

To enable us to achieve this, we offer:

  • Practical and emotional support

  • Befriending, this may be on a one to one basis

  • Advocacy

  • Advice and Information

  • Social Activities

  • Respite care for the person you care for whilst you attend your activity

How can I join the group?

It’s simple, just give the project a call on 0121 474 5555, or come along to one of the sessions in your area. Don’t feel shy about coming alone; bring a friend for support.

What can I expect to be doing?

Activities available at the Maypole Centre:

  • Getting to know you / Group discussions

  • Video / CD night

  • Pool

  • Music Workshop

  • Computer games

  • Surfing the net or chatting with other young carers in the young carers web chat room

  • Chill out

  • Talks from professional bodies. e.g. Police/Fire/Ambulance Services, District Nurses, Crossroads Care Support Workers to provide information

  • Computer games

  • Surfing the net or chatting with other young carers in the young carers web chat room

  • School holidays activities run during the day (This may be with other young carers from other groups)

  • Occasional trips out (This may be with other young carers or members from other groups)

  • Getting involved with after school clubs

  • One to One sessions, (talking to a Support Worker if you have any confidential issues)
