Definition of a young carer

Young carers are children and young people under 18, who's life is restricted by the need to take responsibility for a person who is either:

    • chronically ill
    • has a disability
    • is experiencing mental distress/ illness
    • is affected by alcohol and/ or substance misuse
    • is elderly or infirm.

The person you may be caring for could be:

A parent, a brother or sister, grandparent, other relative, or even a neighbour who is disabled, has some chronic illness, mental health problem or other condition connected with a need for care, support or supervision.

Does this sound like we’re describing you?  If so read on……..

Our Mission

To give every young carer the same life chances as any young person City Wide.

To enable us to achieve this, we offer:

    • Lunch time groups in schools - an opportunity to share your experiences, obtain practical advice (learn about stress and anger management, positive thinking and confidence building), make new friends, participate in arts & crafts and have fun!
    • One to one sessions - giving you a chance to talk and obtain individual support and advice.
    • After school drop-in service - to obtain advice and support from qualified staff.
    • Signposting and referring to appropriate agencies - so you and your family can gain support appropriate to your needs.
    • First Aid training - be more confident about caring responsibilities.
    • Pen Pal Scheme - make friends in other Young Carers Projects throughout England and Wales.
    • Day trips, activities and residential weekends - to experience new things, meet new people and have lots of fun!

It is our wish to provide you with the support you need whilst keeping you and your family together.  We make every effort to ensure that families stay together, when the welfare of you and your family is not at risk.
